How Mastering the Top 5 Pillars of Health Is Easier Than You Think

We can all agree that 2020 was a hot mess. If we’ve learned anything, it’s that health is king. The truth is, the key to optimizing our health doesn’t have to lie in some “new year, new you” idea with restrictive diets or hour-long morning routines. Rather, we’ve established our 5 pillars of health and how you can easily master each to give your mind and body a simple, healthy boost every day.

I finally realized that the health industry has been overcomplicating being healthy. Healthy doesn't have to be hard, it can be just doing a few simple things every day.

5 Simple Things I Always Do to Be My Best Self

It’s time to make healthy habits easy. Let’s dive in.

1. Sleep

With over a third of our lives spent in bed, we all know good sleep can mean the difference between a good day and a bad day. Or more precisely, good health and bad health.

Great sleep helps to regulate your mood, increase concentration, increase working memory, regulate blood pressure, and keep your immune system strong.

How do you get better sleep?

You may have heard of morning routines. Well to get better sleep you need a sleep routine. Something to trigger your body that it’s time for bed.

A lot of people will start to drift off to sleep and then think, “Oh crap, did I turn off the stove?”. Then they get up to check, head back to bed, and start to drift off again. This is no good.

Anything that you notice that wakes you up or causes you to worry while your head is on the pillow, create a list of them and check those off your worry checklist before bed, literally.

Other things you can add to your sleep routine? You can dim the lights an hour before bed, read a book, put your phone out of reach and on do not disturb, or switch your nighttime wine for chamomile tea.

Here’s a sample sleep routine we love:

Turn down the lights and the thermostat

Turn off your phone
Check off your worry checklist
Create a to-do list for tomorrow
Read for 15 minutes
Drink something warm

Find a sleep routine that works for you and stick with it. This will lead to better, deeper sleep and not have you resenting your alarm in the morning. Or hey, with enough great, consistent sleep, you may not even need an alarm. How crazy would that be?

2. Move

Peanut butter and jelly. Avocado and toast. Strawberries and cream. Movement and health go together just like these famous pairings. You can’t have great health without movement.

Moving every day not only boosts your brain health but also elevates your mood. So whether you struggle with extra pounds on the scale or burnout from work, getting out and doing any type of movement every day is key to feeling good.

One study followed 30,000 adults around for 11 years and found that it didn’t matter the intensity of the workouts they did. It only mattered that they moved.

So add in a 20-minute walk here or a little gardening there to give your body and mood a boost.

3. Food

Healthy food can feel complicated. But once I just stopped eating what made me feel bad, it all got easier.

When your body gets good food and knows when to expect it, your body is happy, your stress levels are lower, and you are better able to focus on what needs to get done.

Whether you sign up for a meal delivery service or pick one day a week to do some meal prep, make food a priority for yourself this 2021. You deserve it.

4. Self-Care

You are sitting at your desk, at home, again. The holiday bliss has passed and the reality of a new year and new tasks has hit. There is a lot to do and still so many unknowns.

Before you know it you aren’t taking your walks, you’re neglecting your sleep routine, and you’re skipping your weekly FaceTime with your friends. It’s not shocking that your stress then increases, boosting your cortisol levels, and increasing the sugar in your bloodstream. Before you know it, you’re dealing with anxiety, depression, weight gain, increased blood pressure, intestinal issues, and more.

Don't let this be you. Make self-care a health priority in 2021.

Self-care is the foundation that allows you to stick with all the other pillars on this list. It’s merely prioritizing your mental and emotional health.

Self-care can look like:

Telling yourself things you're grateful for

Unplugging your phone for an hour

Stretching

Saying no to things you don't want to do

Folding your clothes

Watching the clouds

Taking three deep breaths

Feeling the sun on your face

Asking for help

Partaking in self-care has been proven to reduce anxiety and depression, increase energy, improve focus, reduce stress, and keep you healthy.

5. Boost

You may be asking, what is boost? Boost is anything that is not the four pillars we talked about above; sleep, movement, food, and self-care.

Boost can be anything extra you do to improve your focus, increase productivity, decrease stress, and improve your overall wellness.

Here are some examples of boost:

Deepen your relationships with your family and friends

Limit your time on social media

It shrinks pores

Take more baths

Eat hot food (spicy peppers can stimulate blood circulation and prevent cell damage)

Be more honest

Set up clear boundaries

Take great supplements
